The Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama is a not for profit non-sectarian, non-denominational organization established with the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to His Holiness in 1989. In the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations, the Foundation brings together men and women of different faiths, professions and nationalities, through a range of initiatives and mutually sustaining collaborations.

Mission

To promote Universal Responsibility in a manner that respects difference and encourages a diversity of beliefs and practices.

To build a global ethics of non-violence, co-existence, gender equity and peace by facilitating processes of personal and social change.

To enrich educational paradigms that tap the transformative potential of the human mind.

About the Foundation

The Dalai Lama Foundation was established in 2002, with the Dalai Lama's endorsement and advice, by a core founding group including long-time friends of the Dalai Lama and members of the Silicon Valley business community. Participation is open to all, and anyone who wishes to support the Dalai Lama's vision for a better world is warmly welcomed.

The foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization, with a board of directors and paid and volunteer staff. The foundation is international in scope, with a growing network of National Chapters that includes Japan and Russia. Foundation headquarters are located in Palo Alto, California, USA.

Programs

The Dalai Lama Foundation's main program focus is in the area of education, promoting and developing projects and curricula for ethics and peace. Efforts in the curriculum area are guided by an advisory board of professional educators. The foundation's initial offering was a Study Guide for the Dalai Lama's book Ethics for the New Millennium. This guide is available for downloading by anyone wishing to form a study circle to engage in their own exploration of values and ethics.

Partners

The foundation partners with other organizations on initiatives related to education for ethics and peace. Current collaborations include the Ahimsa Center at California Polytechnic University at Pomona; the Women of Tibet Film Project; The Missing Peace: The Dalai Lama Portrait Project; Educators for Nonviolence; and the AirJaldi Summit. The foundation also provides support, on a modest scale, for special projects, including the Sera Mey Tsawa Khangtsen Project and the Tibetan-Himalayan Healthcare Project.
