Acclaimed psychologist, Nobel Peace Laureate showcased in DLC Speaker Series

VANCOUVER, APRIL 26, 2010 -  March was a busy month for the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education as it brought Paul Ekman, one of the leading psychologists of this generation, and Jody Williams, one of only 12 women to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize, to Vancouver for two very engaging discussions.

Today, the DLC is pleased to share both of these speakers’ rich insights and stories with you, complete with audio podcasts and video highlights.

On March 11, Paul Ekman gave a talk entitled "Darwin, the Dalai Lama and the Nature of Compassion" at the Segal School of Business. Ekman shared what he calls a new theory of empathy, compassion, altruism and heroism, which was developed in part through his close relationship with the Dalai Lama. In the talk, Ekman discussed the striking similarity between how Darwin and Buddhism define the centre of compassion, both focusing on the relationship between the mother and infant.

"An Intimate Evening with Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams" brought Williams to Vancouver on March 19 to talk about her ongoing work with the Nobel Women's Initiative and her path to the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Williams, who won the prestigious award for her tireless efforts to ban landmines across the globe, sat down with moderator Maria LeRose for a candid discussion that also covered her work with Vietnam and Latin America as well as her unique relationship with the Dalai Lama.

Both talks were a part of the Dalai Lama Center's ongoing Speaker Series, which offers public events that focus on key areas of interest to the Center and to the Dalai Lama.
