The Dalai Lama Center spoke with Margaret Wheatley, author of the book Perseverance, to get an idea of what this word "perseverance" really means.

"Perseverance is the ability to keep going," says Wheatley. "It's a long term process. In Chinese, the character used for perseverance is often the same one used for patience. I think it's an apt description."

Wheatley will be talking about this concept of perseverance at her upcoming Speakers Series event Perseverance: Leadership in Turbulent Times, October 19-20

"I very much want to support those who are still trying to do good work, to be compassionate, continuing to offer themselves to others, because I know that it's an increasingly difficult time," says Wheatley.

And in this time, she's hoping that leaders will emerge, leaders who have this perseverance but also the ability to listen to others with an open heart.

"It's a time of increasing fear and aggression and I feel we all need to make conscious choices about who we choose to be," says Wheatley. "We need many more leaders who can work with people."

The good news? Wheatley says these leaders are made, not born. We can all become leaders.

"Some people do have innate leadership, but there are millions and millions of people around the world who are not necessarily born leaders, but have become leaders through issues they care about. When the heart opens, that's when we find courage and that's the moment when we step forward and become a leader," says Wheatley.

And a true leader, she says, will not come from a place of self-preservation, but from a place of invitation and inclusion.

"We don't need any more heroes, but we need more hosts."
