"To reduce hatred and other destructive emotions, we must develop their opposites – compassion and kindness"
- His Holiness the Dalai Lama
The Center for the Advancement of Heart-Mind Education (CAHME) is inspired by the positive human qualities of the Dalai Lama, and his strong commitment to educating the hearts of children. CAHME is a hub where parents, schools, young people and communities work together to help children and youth develop the caring relationships and social and emotional abilities that enable them to flourish.
There is a growing body of research that shows that children who develop strong social and emotional skills are less likely to run into problems with drug and alcohol, violence and bullying. They have a more positive attitude towards and do better in school. And they grow into adults who have the skills that today’s employers consider important for the workforce of the future. Simply put, they are happier, and get along with others. Heart-Mind education emphasizes, not only academic achievement, but also the development of the social and emotional strengths that help children to be responsible, collaborative, confident and caring.
Engage • Inform • Inspire • Ignite
To have a positive impact on the lives of children and youth, we need to focus on the culture that raises them. CAHME will bridge silos, and bring together families, children/youth, schools, community organizations, and political leaders to create caring environments for all young people. Connections will occur face to face in neighbourhoods, and globally through virtual networks.
CAHME is a hub where distinguished scholars, educators, parents, community workers, and youth people exchange research and examples of successful evidence-based Heart-Mind practices. CAHME will create experiences where there is mutual learning between scientists and those who live and work with children everyday so that science informs practice and practice informs science.
Using multimedia platforms CAHME shares stories of success and powerful examples of Heart-Mind Education in action, from formal school-based programs designed to nurture social and emotional growth, to young peoples’ spontaneous acts of kindness that model and inspire caring behaviours.
CAHME creates learning resources for teachers, parents, children and youth, and community groups, conducts research, and supports innovative activities that promote healthy communities and heart-mind learning for young people.
