Perhaps compassion is easier for an artist to describe as colour. The "passion" in compassion can signify a deep red-purple hue.
The 'com' part of compassion is either translucent or transparent. ("Com" in French (my 1st language means 'resembling'- or 'like')
So then -like all sentient beings- we are alike in changing and transparent soft tints of skin tones ranging from pinker whites to golden to browns to blacks.
These extend our passion and compassion- seeing and feeling our origins and commonalities opens our hearts to feeling for others and understanding through these deeper emotions that we are not alone- that we see ourselves as part of a coloured and beautiful eternity loop-one that includes us all. *Being present at Jody Williams inspiring discussion through our Dalai Lama Centre has encouraged me to move forward in my own purpose as a community artist and citizen of he world.

Some years ago, due to poor health and less money, I sold my car. Often tired and in pain I began to use public transit. At the same time, I began to read Buddhism. Such lovely concepts about love and caring and compassion which I found pleasant and comforting UNTIL I got on the city bus. Oh, I quickly discovered that I lacked a lot in compassion for people who pushed me or took the front disability seats.
I didn't feel at all loving to people who appeared to be poor or those whose babies cried or who smelled of alcohol or sweat.
Safe alone in my car, I could avoid people who made me uncomfortable.
SO, My definition of compassion came to be seeing the people on the bus as Buddhas. I'll write again when I get there. Don't expect my transformation soon as it turns out that I am far more compassionate in less trying circumstances! Buddha smiles serenely while I grow. Peace and Patience, Pat

Compassion includes the acknowledgement of similarities shared with others, which then allows the growth of feelings of love, empathy, respect, and an increase in actions taken with the goal of the relief of suffering.

I recently got news from a friend that she's been diagnosed with breast cancer (at age 42). This prompted me to think about compassion and since writing is my passion, I put my thoughts into an article. I hope you will find it interesting:

To look on all living things with a full gaze and an open heart. To surround the space with love and wonder, to listen, to heal, to accept. And to love what stands before you whether it is a spider in the web, a golden rod bending in the fall breeze, a star above late at night, or a human suffering. And when needed, to extend a helping hand.

Compassion is expressing love and kindness for yourself and for others, no matter what is occuring in our lives. There are no boundaries for when, or how we embrace compassion.

When we begin to live from a place of compassion our innner beingness becomes a reflection of who we truly are in the world.
