The Science of Kindness
May 8-10, 2014
Old Auditorium, UBC Point Grey
Vancouver, BC
Dear Friends:
We are excited to offer you additional highlights of Heart-Mind 2014:The Science of Kindndess.
The conference kicks off on May 8 with a presentation by Mark Greenberg on the roots of kindness and compassion. How do these qualities develop as children and youth mature, and what can communities, schools, teachers, and parents do to nurture them?

On May 9, Daniel Goleman, author of the international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, will take the stage to share fresh insights outlined in his new book, FOCUS, and Linda Lantieri will introduce some practical strategies for adults to help them be more present and positive in the lives of children.

Kimberly Schonert-Reichl will share findings of her research on ways to motivate children towards acts of kindness, and Chief Dr Robert Joseph will provide an emotional anchor for the conference by describing the ways Kindness is embedded in the rites of passage and the themes of everyday lives of First Nations communities.
Felix Warneken will tackle the question many of us have grappled with, “Are children born with an inclination to be altruistic, or do they need to be taught?” Tom Boyce will highlight how sensitive children (orchid children) thrive in highly supportive environments whereas more resilient children seem to thrive in many circumstances.
On May 10, Erin Gruwell, the inspiration behind the critically acclaimed movie “Freedom Writers,” will tell the story of an extraordinary journey, which helped 150 of her students - many of whom were written off by the school system - to use the power of education to write a book, graduate from high school and attend college.

Maria LeRose returns to host and moderate Heart-Mind 2014.

Early-bird registration ends March 31.
