Twenty Years of Educating Hearts

Our work began two decades ago in Vancouver in 2004.

2004

In 2004, Victor Chan hosts His Holiness for the first of four Vancouver visits: How to balance educating the mind with educating the heart. Three Nobel peace laureates, His Holiness, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Shirin Ebadi are all given honorary degrees by both SFU and UBC. His Holiness agrees to co-found Dalai Lama Center.

2005

The Dalai Lama Peace and Education Center is established as a Charitable Trust on September 21, 2005. A board of International Advisors is also named.

2006

In 2006 His Holiness is conferred Canadian Honorary citizenship. The previous recipients of this honour include Nelson Mandela and Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. The Dalai Lama Center hosts the Vancouver Dialogues Event to promote and highlight the importance of education of the heart – the first of many events to ignite dialogue and conversation.

2007-2008

The Dalai Lama Center presents several events, including several 'Connecting for Change' dialogues, as well as a weekend with Daniel Goleman, author of the New York Times bestsellers Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence.

2009

The DLC hosts the Vancouver Peace Summit: Nobel Laureates in Dialogue with Sir Ken Robinson in Vancouver in September. Guests include Betty Williams, Mairead McGuire, Jody Williams, Mary Robinson, Kim Campbell, Eckhart Tolle, Murray Gell-Mann, Peter Buffett, Pierre Omidyar, Mpho Tutu and Jane Goodall.

2012

The Dalai Lama Center unveils a Bold Vision for BC's Children and Youth. The plan sets out to answer the Dalai Lama's question: "How can we educate the hearts of children?"

2013

Dalai Lama Center launches the Heart and Mind Index, an evidence-based framework developed in collaboration with Dr. Kimberley Schonert-Reichl and the University of British Columbia’s Human Early Learning Project to support the development of social and emotional learning in children – and hosts an inaugural Heart & Mind conference.

2014

The Dalai Lama’s fourth visit. Frank Giustra, John Volken and Djavad Mowafaghian receive the Dalai Lama Humanitarian award. His Holiness is interviewed by Chris Anderson of TED. The DLC launches the heartmindonline.org website for the Science of Kindness conference in Vancouver.

2015

British Columbia takes a significant leap forward in children's education, aligning with His Holiness's vision to educate the hearts of children, by integrating social and emotional learning as a fundamental element of the school curriculum for all children, a pioneering move in North America.

2020

Despite facing significant challenges during the pandemic, the Dalai Lama Center makes notable advancements, including developing new digital communication methods and creating an online course for adults on social and emotional learning. A new initiative is also begun to support healthcare professionals in fostering children's social and emotional well-being.

2024

The Dalai Lama Center celebrates 20 years, setting a new path forward to bring ‘Education of the Heart’ to millions of children across North America. The Center creates a new path forward for the next 20 years.
