What is Mom2Mom ?
Mom2Mom Child Poverty Initiative is an organization started by local pediatrician, Dr. Barbara Fitzgerald, working to end isolation, alleviate poverty and improve outcomes for children. It has set up home bases in several inner city schools and has the support of school staff.
How does it work?
Mom2Mom volunteers are paired with mothers from the inner city who are asking for support. The volunteer becomes a trusted person whom the woman can contact.
Why is Mom2Mom different from other organizations working to alleviate poverty?
M2M exists solely to support women and children living in poverty. We recognize the tremendous resilience and strength of women. Through a supportive relationship with another woman, and a hand up, we create opportunities for families and open possibilities for change.
Is being a mentor time consuming?
No: text or phone weekly, and meet a couple of times per month.
Is it costly?
No: Mom2Mom is a registered society and is funded to support its volunteers. Training and ongoing support is provided for our volunteers.
Am I the right person?
If you have compassion and a will to help another woman out, we will train you to volunteer. The volunteer is a reliable person at the other end of a text for a mother who lives with the constant challenge of poverty.
Are there other opportunities to volunteer besides being a mentor?
Yes! We need help in gathering household goods, with organizing special events, with information technology support for our mothers, grants writing, fundraising, etc. Tell us how you would like to help!
