This week I started my Community Field Experience at the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education (DLC) in Vancouver. While it is an organization that is well known, and that makes a significant contribution to the community of social and emotional learning, the DLC operates with a small team of experienced educators, consultants, and non-profit experts. more

Just under ten months ago, I packed my bags in Toronto and made the big move across the country to Vancouver to start the Bachelors of Education program at UBC. Having studied French and English for over six years I felt I knew a lot and was well versed in the languages I would soon be teaching, but I knew very little of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Heart-Mind Well-Being. Excited and eager to start the program, all UBC teacher candidates undertook classes such as classroom support and inquiry, and quickly became familiar with the transition happening in BC to the new curriculum. But the true test for us all came in February when teacher candidates started their practicum at secondary schools throughout the province. more

Since 2009, student teachers in Simon Fraser University’s Professional Development Program (PDP) International Teacher Education Module (ITEM) have completed their teaching practicums in Dharamsala, India, which is home to Tibetan refugees who live under the leadership of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. For the past two years, the student teachers have been fortunate enough to have an inspiring audience with His Holiness, who also makes his home in Dharamsala. more

Friday October 2nd, 2015 was the Regional StrongStart Pro-D Learning Together conference in Metro Vancouver. Eight Districts that included Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Sunshine Coast and West Vancouver promoted an area of interest to StrongStart Facilitators. In total, 98 facilitators attended the Conference. more

As part of Healthy Schools Week, Oct 5-9, 2015, British Columbia’s Directorate of Agencies for School Health (DASH) launched an online School Connectedness Film Festival; publicly releasing videos developed by six school connectedness grantees in the province. The videos show examples of the strong practices and diverse approaches being used in BC schools and districts to support and improve the school connectedness and mental well-being of students. more
